Enes Kanter Freedom Not Eligible for WNBA Play; Future Arena Ban Remains Unclear

Enes Kanter Freedom attended Sunday’s Chicago Sky game at Wintrust Arena. He wore a black T-shirt with the message: “WOMAN noun. adult human female.”

The former NBA player later left the arena after a verbal confrontation with Chicago Sky point guard Natasha Cloud.

The WNBA has not announced any restrictions on Kanter Freedom’s future attendance. However, league sources told ESPN that he cannot play in the WNBA.

Kanter Freedom Ejected From Wintrust Arena

The incident happened during the second half of the Chicago Sky’s game against the Indiana Fever on August 23, 2026.

Kanter Freedom sat courtside during the game. Cloud approached him after a timeout late in the third quarter. She shouted at him during the exchange.

Kanter Freedom stood up and extended his arms. He then moved several steps toward the court. Arena security quickly intervened and escorted him from the building.

One source said Kanter Freedom made comments toward Cloud throughout the game. However, a nearby fan offered a different account.

The fan wore a Caitlin Clark Fever shirt. He said Kanter Freedom mainly cheered during the game.

Kanter Freedom later addressed the incident on social media.

“I just got kicked out of a @WNBA game for supporting WOMEN! Let that sink in, AMERICA!” he wrote Sunday night.

WNBA Eligibility Remains Unchanged

League sources also addressed Kanter Freedom’s eligibility. They said he cannot play in the WNBA.

The same sources said former NBA player Royce White also cannot play in the league. Both men have declared themselves women and claimed eligibility for the WNBA draft.

The WNBA collective bargaining agreement provides the league’s current eligibility language. The agreement, which the league signed in March, states that “only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA.”

The agreement does not provide a more detailed definition of “woman.” The WNBA also does not currently publish a specific policy covering transgender or intersex player eligibility.

No known transgender woman has played in the WNBA.

Kanter Freedom’s Political Activism

Kanter Freedom spent 11 seasons in the NBA. In recent years, he has become increasingly active in political debates.

He has also spoken publicly about transgender athletes. His comments have contributed to the wider national discussion surrounding the issue.

That debate recently intensified after Fever guard Sophie Cunningham made comments about transgender athletes.

Kanter Freedom has continued to voice his opinions on the subject through public appearances and social media.

No Immediate WNBA Rule Changes Expected

League sources said no current case requires the WNBA to make a formal eligibility decision.

The league plans to continue researching and reviewing the issue. However, sources do not expect the WNBA to change its eligibility rules in the near future.

The league also has not announced whether it will restrict Kanter Freedom from attending future games.

For now, his eligibility to play remains clear, while his future access to WNBA arenas remains undecided.
