A’ja Wilson has made history once again. The Las Vegas Aces superstar won her fifth WNBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) award on October 8, 2026, becoming the first player in league history to claim the honor five times. Moreover, Wilson completed an unprecedented three-peat after winning the award in 2024, 2025 and 2026.

The 30-year-old forward received 65 of 74 first-place votes from a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters, earning 713 points overall. Her dominant season helped her extend an already remarkable legacy in women’s basketball.

A’ja Wilson’s Fifth MVP Award Sets a New Standard

Wilson’s latest achievement places her alone at the top of the WNBA’s MVP record books. Before this season, she had already established herself as the league’s most decorated MVP winner, collecting the award in 2020, 2022, 2024 and 2025.

Now, her fifth victory creates another milestone. Wilson also becomes the first player in the WNBA’s 30-year history to win the MVP award in three consecutive seasons.

Previously, Cynthia Cooper was the only other player to win the award in back-to-back seasons, taking the honor in 1997 and 1998. Wilson has now surpassed that achievement with an unprecedented run of dominance.

However, Wilson’s accomplishment means more than adding another trophy to her collection. It reflects years of dedication, consistent performance and a determination to keep improving even after reaching the top of the sport.

Wilson Dominates the WNBA During the 2026 Season

Wilson delivered another outstanding campaign for the Las Vegas Aces. She played 41 games and averaged 26.2 points, 9.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.9 blocks and 1.4 steals per game.

In addition, she led the league in scoring for the third consecutive season. Her scoring average ranked among the strongest performances in WNBA history, while her work on defense continued to make her one of the league’s most complete players.

Wilson also demonstrated greater range from beyond the three-point line. She shot 40.4% from three-point distance, a career best, and made 38 three-pointers during the season.

Meanwhile, her consistency stood out across the entire schedule. Wilson scored at least 30 points in 13 games, tying the single-season WNBA record she set in 2025. She also recorded 19 double-doubles and scored at least 20 points in 33 games.

These numbers explain why voters overwhelmingly selected Wilson for the award. She combined elite scoring with rebounding, shot-blocking and defensive pressure, giving the Aces a dominant presence at both ends of the court.

Olivia Miles and Caitlin Clark Finish Behind Wilson

Although Wilson captured the award comfortably, several other players also delivered impressive seasons.

Minnesota Lynx rookie Olivia Miles finished second with 442 points and six first-place votes. Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell took third place with 287 points, while teammate Caitlin Clark finished fourth with 212 points and one first-place vote.

New York Liberty forward Breanna Stewart rounded out the top five with 171 points.

Nevertheless, Wilson’s lead in the voting reflected the scale of her impact throughout the season. She not only produced exceptional individual numbers but also continued to anchor a Las Vegas team with championship ambitions.

An Emotional Moment for a Historic Career

Wilson’s fifth MVP award carried a deeply personal meaning. When she learned about the result during an Aces practice, she became emotional while reflecting on how far she had come.

She explained that her younger self never imagined winning five MVP awards or becoming a three-time WNBA champion. At that stage of her life, she focused on finding a way forward rather than imagining the achievements that would eventually define her career.

That reflection offered a glimpse into the person behind the statistics. Wilson’s success represents more than athletic excellence; it also reflects perseverance, personal growth and gratitude for the opportunity to play basketball at the highest level.

Since the Aces selected her first overall in the 2018 WNBA Draft, Wilson has developed into one of the most influential players in the sport. Her collection of honors includes three WNBA championships, two WNBA Finals MVP awards, three Defensive Player of the Year awards and eight All-Star selections.

As a result, her fifth regular-season MVP strengthens her case among the greatest players in women’s basketball history.

The Las Vegas Aces Face a Crucial Playoff Challenge

Despite Wilson’s individual success, the Aces still face a difficult challenge in the 2026 playoffs.

At the time of the MVP announcement, Las Vegas trailed the Golden State Valkyries 2–0 in their best-of-five semifinal series. The Aces therefore faced the threat of elimination as they prepared for Game 3.

Wilson’s award provides another reminder of her extraordinary individual form. However, the team must translate that excellence into victories if it hopes to continue its championship defense.

The contrast between her historic individual achievement and the Aces’ playoff situation adds another layer to an already compelling season. Wilson has established herself as the league’s most decorated MVP winner, but the postseason will determine whether Las Vegas can add another championship to its collection.

A’ja Wilson Continues to Redefine Greatness

Wilson’s fifth WNBA MVP award marks a defining moment in the league’s history. By becoming the first five-time winner and the first player to claim the award three years in a row, she has set a standard that future generations will strive to match.

More importantly, her 2026 performance shows that her success is not simply a product of past achievements. Wilson continues to produce at an elite level, expand her game and influence results on both ends of the floor.

As the playoffs continue, she will look to turn another individual milestone into team success. Regardless of what happens next, Wilson’s latest award has already secured her place in WNBA history.
